Choreography Reviews

The King and I

"The best scenes of the night come during the extended "play-within-a-play" segment, when the royal children produce a version of Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" for European visitors. . . the sequence - backed by sinuous, evocative choreography and amazing Asian-inspired costumes - transports the audience along the Underground Railroad via Siam.

.  . . the most literate and entertaining recreation of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" you're likely to see this year."

- Chris Silk, Naples Daily News, FL

"There is a mesmerizing, eloquent and amazing Asian dance segment . . . The authenticity of the dance and costuming are totally breathtaking, all driven wonderfully by our favorite choreographer, Amy Marie McCleary."

- Bekki Shanklin, Soar Online Gallery, Fort Myers, FL

"This musical contains a show within it: a Siamese interpretation of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" performed in traditional estern style . . . This fascinating dance, choreographed by Amy Marie McCleary, is very moving.

. . . there is an exuberance, an undenible glee . . . . which is exactly how this entire producition makes you feel."

- Nancy Stetson, Florida Weekly, FL

"Originally choreographed by Jerome Robbins in the 1951 Broadway production, the ballet still packs a wallop. Choreographer Amy Marie McCleary (who is also assistant director), brings some lovely ideas to the ballet, and the dancing, led by Hsin-Yu Liao as Eliza, is stunning."

All Shook Up

"The smart, lively, inventive choreography is by Bernier's colleague Amy McCleary, who also choreographed the touring Theater League show of "The Wedding Singer" that came through Wichita last week. In both cases, McCleary got the joint jumping."

- Bob Curtright, Wichita Eagle, KS

The Big Bang

Amy Marie McCleary's choreography shines in small moments -  an Asian Ladies dance with carved fans or scenes of Jewish slaves building the Pyramids out of ottomans to the tune of a chain-gang song.

- Chris Silk, coastalbeat.com

Choreographer Amy Marie McCleary also contributed moves that add comic depth to the musical numbers, which often parody theatrical cliches.

- Drew Sterwarld, The News Press, Fort Myers, FL

. . . choreographer Amy Marie McCleary gets them to dance and move in ways that are funny and not-too-polished.

- Nancy Stetson, Florida Weekly, Fort Myers, FL

Footloose

"Footloose" yanks the best parts of the cult 1984 film - the music and the teen angst - and stitches it together with snappy choreography, riotous dance numbers and a lovable, likable cast.

Amy Marie McCleary's vibrant, lively choreography

celebrates the youthful exuberance of the teen years . . .

(the moves) come served with the vivaciousness of happy-

go-lucky kids just looking for a place to dance. Your toes

will be tapping and your fingers will be snapping"

- Chris Silk, Naples News, Naples, FL

Broadway Palm’s rendition (of Footloose) is entertaining, exuberant, fun.

. . . and choreographer Amy Marie McCleary highlights what this musical is all about: the joy and freedom of dance.
